Alek at this time is trying to find a way to stop the war and is in a great deal of stress. When Deryn has to go on back to London Alek finds himself being torn between two different things that he wants, Peace and his friend Deryn. Alek finds himself choosing Deryn over Peace and he learns that he really is in love with her as she is with him. Alek is trying to make peace in New York and Deryn is on her way to London, but keeps hinting that she will stay with Alek. I am very close to finishing the book and I think that it will become more clear what will happen with this hard decision. I think that Alek will find a way to choose both his friend and peace because most books like this usually end that way.
This book is a mix of Science Fiction and historical fiction. Scott Westerfield balances the history of WWI with his own mix of fantastical creativity. Goliath also has some illustrations that it uses to show exactly what Westerfield is saying.
Hudson, this book sounds really interesting. I have read books that take place during a war. For example, I read "Soldier Boys", which was about two teenage soldiers that fought in WW2. I don't think I have ever read a book about WW1, so this might be something I would enjoy reading. The main character, as you described him, seems like he would be fun to read about, too.
