Eragon

This week I read the three books in the Eragon series that have been published so far. There will be a fourth one coming out soon. A summary of the first book: Eragon, a young boy living in Carvahall, goes into the Spine, a haunted mountain range, and finds what he thinks is a white stone. He keeps this stone at the house of his foster parents until one day, the stone starts making weird sounds, breaks, and a baby dragon comes out. Eragon names this dragon Saphira and befriends her. A few days later, Eragon and Saphira go out into the Spine. They come home to find that there is no house and that his foster father has died. Eragon then embarks on a quest to find the Ra’zac, the beings that destroyed Eragon’s farm, and kill them. He sets out with Brom, the village storyteller. On their way to kill the Ra’zac, Brom tells Eragon many things that he needs to know to be a Rider. A Rider is someone who rides dragons. These people ruled before one of their own went mad, killed all the dragons and riders and seized power. This person is Galbatorix and he still rules the empire. Eragon fails to kill the Ra’zac, but he does join the Varden, a group opposed to the empire and Galbatorix. Soon thereafter, Eragon kills a Shade, a being that is made of spirits. This is where the first book ends. I would recommend this book and the whole series because, although they are a little slow, they are well written books that capture the reader until the end. They have a good reading level that focuses on issues that are present today in a way that you don’t notice them so as to not ruin the book for the reader who just wants to read.
