The Last Apprentice, The Revenge of the Witch

For my independent reading book I chose, The Last Apprentice, Revenge of the Witch. This book is about a Spook, or someone who deals with all the magical problems of a certain land, and his newest apprentice, Tom. Tom’s first night as the apprentice consisted of staying in a haunted house with a wife-murder’s ghast in the basement. This was a fair assessment of what was going to happen with his entire first month of apprenticeship. He had to deal with another ghast making all his meals, traveling around the county dealing with problems with the Spook, and learning all he could. His problems started when he met a girl with pointy shoes, who had him give cakes to a very powerful witch, which helped her escape her prison. Tom then had to follow her and end her life, which only made her more dangerous. Later, when he was back at his family’s farm, the witch controlled their butchers body and tried to kill the family. Tom forced her out of the body and into the pigpen, where the pigs ate her, ending her life indefinitely.

In my opinion, the Spook and Tom will become great friends as the series continues. The Spook seems scary, always wearing a hood and carrying a large staff, but he is kind at heart, and has a good sense of humor. He and Tom are alike in many ways, which is why I believe they will become good friends.
