I am currently reading the science fiction book, Unwind by Neal Shusterman. So far the book has connected the three stories of the protagonists: Connor, Risa, and Lev into one main story and is constantly switching and being told from their different point of views. The plot of the book is about Unwinds who are running away from being unwound. Although Neal hasn’t directly told the reader what being unwound means, he has stated that Unwinds (or Tithes) are taken away to harvest camps and are killed there. My reaction to this fact was disbelief. I couldn’t contemplate why a guardian would sign a paper that allowed their child to be killed at a later date while for the time being they acted like everything was normal. I soon came to understand the reasoning; Connor was lazy, a poor student, and an underachiever, Risa -although an exceptional musician- was a ward of the state, and Lev’s parents had signed the Unwind papers before he was born regardless of the potential success he may have obtained. This book is really intriguing and I can’t wait to read more!
