Pages 1-168- The Scorch Trials

I have chosen “The Scorch Trials” by James Dashner for my 4th quarter independent reading assignment. This fictional book is a sequel to The Maze Runner. The author begins the novel where the original version left off. It starts out with Thomas waking up and trying to telepathically talk to Teresa. He is panicked about a new disease that is infecting the group. It is called the Cranks. The group reassembles to investigate their new environment to realize that the individuals that had rescued them were now dead. The Gladers are introduced to a group called the B Group. These young kids were put through the same torture and testing as in the Maze Runner. There are similar characters and personalities to Thomas and Teresa. Their names are Aris and Rachel, however they are titled Group B. The combined group (A and B) realize that they have tattoos on the back of their necks Newt's says he's "The Glue". Minho's says "The Leader". Thomas's says “To be killed by Group B".

The main characters in the book realize that the rescue from the Maze was just the beginning of a terrifying world. They are not facing freedom, they are challenged with a new set of obstacles to overcome. The irony of the book is that the characters have been put through torture in the first sequel, more than anyone could imagine someone to overcome. In this book, the author continues to intrigue the reader with hope and a desire for the characters to succeed. I continue to enjoy the second novel by James Dashner. His books are filled with adventure, excitement and suspense.
