Unbroken Part 2
The story of Louie and Phil gets even more incredible in the next part of the book. They are found by part of the Japanese navy when they wash up on the shore of the island they finally get to. Unlike previous accounts of what the Japanese are like, they are kind, give them food and clean water, and treat them well. This goes on until they reach their first stopping point, which isn't that bad, though they don't get a lot of food and are occasionally hurt. The next stop proves to be a drastic change for the worse. They are underfed because the Japanese take most of the food intended for them. Also, they aren't permitted to talk to each other or even look up from the ground, unless being talked to by a Japanese official. Half way through Louie's time there, Phil is forced to move camps, and is never heard from again. As some of the prisoners, including Louie, fight back and are about to escape, their copied maps are found, leading them to send Louie and a few others to another camp, which is even worse. Led by "The Bird" (as he is called the the POWs), who savagely beats prisoners in fits of rage, and with much harder work, there is a struggle to survive. Also, Louie is singled out and brutally beaten daily by The Bird, so much so that Louie has nightmares about him. Eventually, The Bird is switched to another camp, and there is peace at the camp, until Louie is again transferred. As he walks up the new camp, The Bird is standing at the entrance, glaring at him.

I think that you touch on a point that nobody really thinks about. The fact of the Japanese considering us to be demons and the fact that we considered them demons. With the help of propaganda both of our countries considered the other to be evil.
ReplyDeleteIs this a true story? I feel like my Dad has explained this to me before. It seems really interesting, I'll have to try it.
