Elixir

Grace Armacost 10/1/11

I just started reading the book Elixir by Hilary Duff and it’s already super exhilarating. A young photojournalist, Clea Raymond, travels the world, capturing memories and snapshots of the world. She is staying in Paris with a friend named Rayna. When Clea was younger, her father passed away during a fire. No one knows where he was, or how he really died. All they know, was that it was during a fire. One night, Rayna tells Clea that she’s going out to meet a friend in his apartment with a view of the Eiffel Tower. Clea approves, but informs Rayna that she’s nervous something will happen to her. Rayna replies by saying, “Dont worry, you’ll never lose me.” The way Rayna said “never” always made Clea cringe. She thought saying, “You’ll never lose me,” would jinx her words and the opposite would happen. Instead of never losing Rayna, she would lose her. But anyways, Rayna goes on her way, and Clea stays at their hotel watching TV. She doses off into a dream that startles her. People are rushing, trying to escape a hotel. A man is right in front of her burning in a fire. Everyone is panicking and there’s no way out. Clea woke up frightened to learn that it was only a dream and the reason she was thinking about fires was because the current television show was talking about a fire. She tuned into the news program, that told her there was a fire happening in an apartment building nearby with a view of the Eiffel Tower. Clea immediately thought of Rayna going to her friends apartment, with a view of the Eiffel tower. Clea became extremely anxious and quickly took a cab to the fire. And I won’t reveal the rest, because then I would spoil the first chapter! So far, I really like the book and I’m excited to see what happens throughout the rest of the story.
