The Zookeeper's Wife
I just reached page 100 The Zookeeper's Wife, a book about a Polish family who owns a zoo when WWII starts. So far, I've gotten an introduction to the book, which goes to about page 50. That basically tells you how life at the zoo was before the war. Around page 50, the Germans start invading and dropping bombs and stuff. The husband is forced to go into the army, and the wife is forced to leave the zoo to go to Warsaw, the nearest major city. Around page 75, wife decides to return to the zoo because she has seen the devastation that is happening in the city and realizes that the zoo will be just as safe. When she arrives, a good number of her animals are dead, and the rest are in bad shape. She lets some go free and takes some into her house. Just before page 100, the Polish army surrenders, and Germany marches into the city. The husband also comes home.
